 Form Comparison of Adjectives

Comparison of Adjectives is divided into three, namely: 

– Positive (equal) 

– Comparative (more level) 

– Superlative (most) 

Positive degree (equal) 

A positive degree is an adjective or adverb in simple form. Positive degree (adjective) used to express that an object or person is in the same state as another. 
The equivalent comparison formula is: 

Positive (+) :  Subject + to be + as + adjective + as + object 
example: 

• Lina is as beautiful  as her mother (Lina cantik seperti ibunya) 
• Yogy is as tall as my brother (Yogy tinggi seperti kakakku) 
• Dani is as strong as Tommy (Dani kuat seperti Tommy) 
• Diky is as handsome as my father ( Diky tampan seperti bapakku) 
• Tina is as cute as my sister  (Tina imut seperti adikku) 

Negative (-) : Subject + to be + not + as/so + adjective + as + object 

example: 

• Lina is not as beautiful  as her mother (Lina tidak cantik seperti ibunya) 
• Yogy is not as tall as my brother (Yogy tidak tinggi seperti kakakku) 
• Dani is not as strong as Tommy (Dani tidak kuat seperti Tommy) 
• Diky is not as handsome as my father ( Diky tidak tampan seperti bapakku) 
• Tina is not as cute as my sister  (Tina tidak imut seperti adikku) 

Comparative Degree (More Level)

Comparative degree is used to express that the state of an object or person is more than others that are unequal. In other words, one object has advantages over another. You just add the suffix -er behind the adjective or add more in front of the adjective. Don't forget to use than before mentioning the object (second object). Comparative degree formula: Subject + to be + adjective + -er + than + object Subject + to be + more + adjective + than + object example:

• Madam Lee is taller than Lucia. (Nyonya Lee lebih tinggi dari Lucia) 
• Lia is not very strong. Mia is Stronger (Lia tidak terlalu kuat. Mia adalah yang terkuat) 

Superlative Degree (Most Level) 

Superlative degree is used to express that an object or person is the most compared to another, where one of the most ... of other objects. You just add the suffix -est behind the adjective or add most in front of the adjective. Don't forget to add the before the adjective that serves as an affirmation. In Superlative degrees add the suffix –est after the adjective or add most in front of the adjective. The word "the" is added as an affirmation before the adjective that serves as an affirmation.

• Samuel is the tallest boy among them (Samuel adalah anak tertinggi di antara mereka) 
• Mr. Purnomo was the oldest man in the room (Tuan Purnomo adalah orang tertua di dalam ruangan tersebut).
